Mary Louise Walter, 98, of Beloit passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2018. She was born in Beloit on April 8, 1920 to Herman and Minnie Walter, the fourth of five children. Mary Lou attended St. John’s schools, graduating in 1938.
Immediately after high school, Mary Lou worked for a lawyer in Beloit performing clerical duties. She moved with her sister Vera to Los Angeles in 1940 and took a position as a legal stenographer in the office of the California Attorney General. She retired twice, but both times was asked to return to work for the state again. Fifty two years later, at the age of 72, she retired for good.
Mary Lou took an avid interest in the stock market and took pride in being successful and independent. She also enjoyed intellectual and cultural activities, reading and staying current on national and financial news even in her later years.
She returned to the Beloit area in 2006 to be closer to family, and owned her own home for several years before moving to Hilltop Lodge at age 92.
Mary Lou is survived by her brother Bill Walter (Louise) of Beloit, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Grace Heiman and Vera Barton and brother Leo Walter.
